PREP SWIMMING

Top Swimmer Morrison Goes to Sunlake

By CRISTINA LEDRA "Tampa Tribune-PASCO" correspondent

Pasco swim fans know Brad Morrison to be synonymous with powerhouse Land O’ Lakes but that all changed with the opening of Sunlake.

Morrison is zoned for Sunlake and that’s where he is now, Land O’ Lakes coach Barbara Hayes said.
Morrison, a junior, is the county’s top returning boys swimmer. He placed third in the 100 backstroke (54.94) and 10th in the 500 freestyle at the Class 2A state meet last season.

Boys to watch

1. Brad Morrison, Sunlake, Jr., 500 freestyle, 100 backstroke: Now zoned for the recently opened high school, Morrison did well for Land O'Lakes last season. He took his talent to state competition, placing third in the 100 back and 10th in the 500 free.

2. Renzo Alvarez, Mitchell, Sr., 500 freestyle, 200 IM: Last season Alvarez was a conference champ in the 500 freestyle and the 200 IM. He placed 14th in the 200 IM at the state level.

3. Dan Barry, Springstead, Jr., 50 freestyle, 100 butterfly: Hernando county swimmer of the year, Barry put on an impressive show at regionals, clinching the top spot in the 50 free and 100 fly. He also placed in the top spot in both events at the state level.

4. Joseph Geschke, Ridgewood, Fr., to be determined: Already at 6 feet, 1 inch and more than 200 pounds, coach Melissa Welch said he is spending a great deal of time in the pool. Welch said he is proficient in any stroke, and they will soon determine which one he will focus on.

5. Mike Centanni, Gulf, Jr., 50, 100 freestyle: Coach Casey Klaplen described him as "really fast" and hopes to see him into the state finals. Centanni placed fifth in the 50 free at regionals.

6. Rob Fahrer, Gulf, Sr., backstroke: Team captain and multifaceted swimmer. Coach Casey Klaplen said he is proficient in any stroke.

7. Barret Sheffield, Central, Jr., 100 breaststroke, 200 IM: Conference champ in the breast, Sheffield wound up seventh at regionals.
